ROSCOSMOS: Space Debris Might Become Hazard to Russia in 50 Years

Contamination of the Earth orbit can not only complicate space exploration, but also endanger the national security of Russia.

ROSCOSMOS, the Federal Space Agency of the Russian Federation reports that unless we shift to new technologies of using spacecrafts, the garbage orbiting around the Earth will considerably impede space exploration in 50-60 years.

Scientists point out that recently cases of possible collision of orbiters with space debris larger than 10 cm have become much more frequent. Attitude maneuver is required to avoid such a collision that might lead to failure, or even explosion. At the same time these maneuvers reduce the orbiter's  operating time due to fuel contingencies and may possibly cause a flight failure.

The Central Engineering Research Institute informs that there is about 750 million objects of space debris orbiting around the Earth. Visible are 17 thousand objects, those larger than 10 centimeters, whereas smaller garbage pieces remain invisible potential threat to satellites and other orbiters.
