Russian scientists are going for excavation of the first-ever mass burial of cave lions. The works will be carried out in the territory of Bashkiria Republic.
Some time ago paleontologists found 10 fossils of this ancient animal in the Cave of Imanay located in the national park Bashkiria. Now the scientists hope to unearth remains of the Neanderthal man as well.
It should be noted that the burial ground in the Cave of Imanay is the first massive cemetery of prehistoric lions on this planet. Only 2 individuals of this category were found in France earlier. Age of the Russian finds ranges from 35 to 200 thousand years. The radio-carbon analysis can provide more exact information.
The cave lion's skull is larger than that of its modern African relative. The Bashkir cemetery is uniqueness for this massive accumulation of animals' bones in one area, which was quite a surprising fact for experts.
