Orthodox Christians Embark on Lent Season

Today, 27 February, the Lent starts for the Orthodox believers. It is the longest and most restricting of all multi-day fasts. In honor of this event, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia will lead the service at Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral.

Traditionally, the head of the Moscow Patriarchate asked for everyone's forgiveness on Shrove Sunday, the day before the beginning of Lent, which is revered as Forgiveness Sunday in Russia. He reminded that the Lent is meant for elevating the state of one's own soul, heart, and mind. With all that said, food restrictions remain fundamental.
