The Science Museum of London is hosting the exhibition Valentina Tereshkova: The First Woman in Space.
The pioneer woman astronaut personally opened the exhibition, which unfolds her biography, starting from her work at a factory and skydiving as a hobby, to her current political career.
Valentina Tereshkova's first space flight took place on June 16, 1963, two years after the first ever flight by Yuri Gagarin. She spent almost three days in the orbit around the Earth. Only 20 years later, the first American woman, Sally Ryde, made her space flight.
A documentary film under the title The Legend of Valentina with archival materials shown for the first time was screened at the opening ceremony.
The exhibition is part of the Great Britain and Russia Year of Science and Education and continues the tradition of studying the history of Soviet space exploration.
The exhibition organized in cooperation with the Russian State Museum Exhibition Center runs from March 16 to September 17, entrance free.
