The famous masterpiece of Old Russian painting, Zvenigorod Tier of three icons, was not painted by Andrei Rublev, experts of the Tretyakov Gallery and State Research Institute of Restoration have found out.
The icon paintings have been examined with the latest and expensive equipment. Experts thoroughly studied the way the medieval artist had brushed paints on and prepared the underpainting. Afterwards the obtained data was compared to the recent results of the same research of Andrei Rublev’s most famous Holy Trinity.
It turned out that nearly all the typical elements making an individual manner of the creators of the Zvenigorod Tier and Holy Trinity significantly differ. Moreover, there is a big time gap between the painting of the two masterpieces (the 1400th and 1425-1427).
To change the inscription at the icon exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery, the museum staff has to wait for the completion of the research and the publication of a relative article.
