The festival is held to preserve culinary national traditions, increase the level of professional skills and culture of service in the catering sector, the ministry noted.

Kalmykia is a unique Asian republic situated in the European part of Russian Federation. It is the only Buddhist republic in this part of Russia and in the whole Europe as well. It is a point where Asia meets Europe, and the East meets the West. This is an ancient land that still bears the traces of its past civilizations and preserves the cultural heritage of the Huns, ancient states and peoples, Chenghis Hans's troops and the Golden Horde. The Great Silk Route, one of the main ancient routes connecting peoples of Europe, Siberia, Central Asia and Middle East, passed through the Kalmyk steppes. One of the main reasons to come to this land is to experience a wonderful feeling of unity with the nature and energy of boundless steppes, the beauty of wild tulips and vast fields.

The Kalmyks brought to the Volga steppes their folklore, one of the richest in the world, sharing common roots with the treasures of folklore and literature of India, Tibet and Mongolia. But the masterpiece of the Kalmyk oral tradition is, of course, a heroic epic "Dzhanghar" glorifying twelve fearless powerful warriors and Dzhanghar, their leader who defend their fairy-like homeland of Bumba and its happy people from their numerous enemies.

The Republic is situated in the northwestern part of the Caspian Lowlands. Kalmykia borders Dagestan in the south, Stavropol region in the southwest, Astrakhan Region in the east, Rostov Region in the west. The territory of Kalmykia is bounded in the southwest by the Caspian Sea, in the south and southeast by rivers Manych and Kyma, and in the northeast by the mighty Volga. The total area of Kalmykia is 76 thousand square km. equal to the sum of territories of Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg. Its population is 320 thousand people. It is concentrated in 3 cities - Elista, Gorodovikovsk and Lagan. The capital of Kalmykia is Elista. The climate of Kalmykia is dry and continental: summer is hot; winter is frosty and not snowy. Average winter temperature is 8-26 C below zero; average summer temperature is 22-24 C above zero.
