Tumen doctors carried the first ever surgery on implantation of radioactive sources of iodine.
It was done in the framework of treating a patient with the pancreatic cancer of fourth stage.
The operation was conducted by Vasily Oschepkov, the head of the radiotherapeutic service "Medical City", together with a colleague from St. Petersburg. It proved to be a success.
Micro seeds of radioactive iodine were implanted with little needles through the abdominal skin and the stomach into the pancreas.
This method was previously used only for the treatment of the prostate gland.
