Nanoparticles penetrate into an atherosclerotic plaque and "physically break it down".
Researchers of the Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) laboratory have created the prototype of a new generation coronary stent, which is covered with nanoparticles to destroy atherosclerotic plaques.
Deputy director of the TPU Biomedical Technologies Research Laboratory, Marina Trusova reported about it.
"We have made the prototype of a special stent, with nanoparticles on its surface penetrating inside an atherosclerotic plaque and changing its properties. We could say, they physically break it - the plaque is broken down and eventually flushed out with the blood flow. It is already known that the stent is not toxic, it is safe for humans,” – Mrs. Trusova said.
