2,2 000 Samples Transferred by Russia to World Seed Deposit in February

Altogether the depositary received over 10 thousand safe takes of the collection of the All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources from the RF.

Russia provided about 2.2 thousand samples of food plants seeds to the World Depository of cultivated plants’ seed collections located on the Island of Spitsbergen.

The World Seed Deposit on Svalbard (Svalbard Globale frhvelv) was created exactly 10 years ago. The main task of the repository is to prevent the destruction of the genetic diversity of seeds as a result of possible global catastrophes.

The collections transferred for storage in Svalbard are the seeds of food plants predominantly: wheat, barley, oats, and legumes. Only those plants that provide food security are in real demand in the World Seed Deposit.
