Antarctic station "Russian", which was preserved on the coast of the Mary Bird land28 years ago, is planned to be activated again in 2020.
This was reported by Valery Lukin, the head of the Russian Antarctic Expedition and Deputy Director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
“Roscosmos is interested in the resumption of the year-round operation of the Russian Station, which remains closed so far. The government plans to increase our funding in 2020, which will enable us to re-open the Russian Station and start working there again”, - he said.
Mr. Lukin added that the station had been mothballed in 1990. “It operated on the seasonal-field base, being a very hard-to-reach area; on the other hand it is the only point that makes it possible to provide observations of this huge Pacific sector of Antarctica”, - he pointed out.
