Luminous Silicon Nanocrystals Synthesized for Use in Power Engineering

Silicon quantum dots can be applied in production of solar batteries.

A group of Russian and Swedish scientists, using gold nanoribbons, managed to change the glow of silicon nanocrystals (silicon quantum dots).

Experts from Skoltech, the Lomonosov Moscow State University and Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm demonstrated that gold nanopowders change the optical properties of silicon quantum dots, which can be used to create solar batteries.

"The use of silicon quantum dots in photocells would significantly reduce the technological costs in solar energy. Moreover, we would not have to use poisonous substance, such as arsenic or lead, in the production of solar batteries," - the report says. The results of the study are published in the Scientific Reports journal.
