Petersburg Scientists Engineered Equipment Parts for Modernization of LHC

Experts of the St. Petersburg State University have created new ultralight designs for installing the detectors of the Large Hadron Collider.

They will be used to modernize one of the experimental units of LHC ALICE, which is scheduled for 2020.

Vladimir Zherebchevsky, head of the Nuclear Physics Laboratory at St. Petersburg State University, told about this to journalists.
“In 2020, the intensity of beams’ collisions at the collider will be increased and therefore it is necessary to get as close as possible to the point of collision in order to study the particles that decay very rapidly. To do this, we need even more ultralight designs [for the installation of detectors], which weigh less, so that there is no unwanted dispersion of the particles”, - Prof. Zherebchevsky explained.

It is such ultra-light designs that have been developed in St. Petersburg.
