Synchrotron to Be Constructed for Proton Therapy Center in Primorsky Territory

The synchrotron will appear on the Russky Island as part of the 2nd stage of the Schwabe project on constructing the Proton Therapy Center, the press service of the Primorsky Territory administration informs.

Synchrotron radiation is used in many scientific fields: from the study of materials’ structure and new pharmaceuticals to the therapy of cancer cells. In particular, high radiation intensity helps to improve the quality of images in angiography and mammography to detect a tumor at an early stage. Moreover, this feature makes it possible to affect mainly the diseased cells without destroying the healthy ones in the process of treatment.

“The Schwabe company intends to build a proton therapy center in Primorsky Territory with an annual capacity of more than a thousand patients. The project will be implemented jointly with the Kurchatov Institute,” - the vice-governor, Pavel Serebryakov, pointed out.
