Scientists of the Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) have discovered a new way of producing supertough oxide ceramics and developed a technology for making Russia’s first ceramic screws for the spine.
“Experts have invented a method for producing a dense ceramic material and developed a technology of making screws for the spine. Unlike metal, they do not require replacement, and the patient will not need a repeat operation”, - the report reads.
“In contrast to the currently used metal screws, ceramics do not cause allergies and inflammations. The screws of oxide ceramics do not require replacement, so the patients will be relieved from repeated surgical interventions in the spine”, - a representative of the NSTU explained.
Products from the new material cost several times less than their western counterparts.
