Main Trends of the Russian Grocery Retail Trade

Fitch Ratings has outlined the main trends of the Russian grocery retail trade for 5 years ahead. Further consolidation of retailers, development of promotion offers and the rivalry for the leadership between the major market players will determine the prospects for the development of retail trade in Russia.

In monetary terms, the sales of food products (including VAT) increased up to 14.4 trillion roubles in 2017. However, the market remains highly fragmented, its geographical development is uneven, and this enables the retailers to grow and consolidate - primarily, at the expense of the regions.

The “Fitch Ratings” international rating agency predicts that “X5 Retail Group”, “Magnit” and “Lenta” will continue to expand by taking over local networks. Now the ten largest retailers in the segment already account for 29% of the retail market, and this is not the limit. Under the conditions of a stiffer competition today, many regional retail chains are closing their businesses and free up a lot of space. Large federal companies will wait for the closure of local retailers and conclude new lease contracts for vacant retail spaces.
