Traditional arts and crafts, clothing, books and icons of the Russian North are exhibited in the State History Museum.
In the north of the European part of Russia, including the lands of the modern Vologda, Arkhangelsk, and Murmansk Regions, the republics of Karelia and Komi, Russian folk arts and crafts have developed over the centuries.

Wooden dishes, furniture, home decorations were painted with images of horses and birds, lions and griffins, mermaids and various genre compositions in bright fabulous colors.
They are presented at the exhibition "Russian North", along with birch bark handicraft items and distaffs with painted genre scenes. Carved icons from northern Russian monasteries are displayed here too.
Only in the Russian North, has the national Russian costume of the pre-Peter the Great era been preserved. Traditional Russian clothes make an integral part of the exhibition.
