Russian Shrinkflation

Russian Shrinkflation

Food manufacturers began to reduce packaging to hide growth in prices, as «BBC Russian service» reported.  The publication refers to the post on Pikabu portal, where a photo of eggs, which were sold in a set of nine not ten, was firstly published. Similar packages were found in other supermarkets. The cost of "nine" eggs amounted to 64.9 rubles.

Journalists of "BBC Russian Service"  conducted their own investigation and found several similar cases of attempts to hide price increase. Thus, the packaging of fruit juice decreased by 0.15 liters, and cow milk and beer in a can by 0.05 liters. 50 grams less content was sold in mayonnaise packaging, 35 grams less - in sour cream, 8 grams less - porous chocolate in the bar. Instead of 180 grams of sliced cheese, two categories appeared: 150 and 125 grams each.

It is noted that the decrease in the quantity of goods in the package with rising prices fits into the trend of “shrinkflation” (the process of items shrinking in size or quantity). Thus, manufacturers hide the sharp growth of products prices.
