The Russian startup StartRocket plans to create an advertising billboard in near-earth orbit with the help of small satellites, as Astronomy magazine reports. Satellites called CubeSats will be located at an altitude of about 450 kilometers; each satellite will be a pixel in the image. Orbiting satellites will deploy reflectors of up to 10 square meters, so that the image created by an array of satellites will be visible on Earth.
It is noted that the technology can be used not only for advertising purposes, but also for the transfer of urgent messages from the government in cases of emergency.
If the startup attracts funding, the first test launch can be completed this summer, and the full launch of the project - by 2021. The idea has already been criticized by astronomers and other groups opposing light pollution of the sky.
