Scientists will study ancient settlements found on the shore of the Karelian White Sea. A grant from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research has been received for this work, archaeologist Nadezhda Lobanova, project leader at the Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, reported.
“For three years we will explore the Karelian shore of the White Sea. We will establish the area of ancient settlements and their age. Such work will be done for the first time”, - she explained.
Also, the research by geologists will help figure out what the climate was like, what plants grew in the area, and how the natural environment changed.
There are 113 ancient dwellings on the Karelian shore of the White Sea. So far only one of them has been studied. Thus, in the summer of 2014, about 50 half-dugouts of the Early Metal Age were found in one place. The settlement is about five thousand years old.
