June 17 saw the opening of the Tchaikovsky International Music Competition with the performance of Daniel Trifonov.
The young pianist is the winner of the previous competition. The Tchaikovsky International Competition is held every four years. Two cities - Moscow and St. Petersburg – are hosting the festival.
The jury consists of eminent musicians from Russia and around the world, including Denis Matsuev from Russia and Martin Engström from Sweden. The renowned conductor Valery Gergiev heads the jury.
Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets expressed hope for objectivity. She reminded that the history of the competition is more than 60 years old and every time it discovers new names.
Twenty-four violinists, pianists and cellists have been selected to the first stage of the competition. Sixty singers and ninety-six musicians playing wind instruments will compete as well.
