The Number of People Employed in the SME Sector Decreased by Almost 600 Thousand People

The number of people employed in the small and medium-sized business sector reached 15.4 million in October this year, decreasing by 567 thousand compared to the same period last year.

Employment in small companies decreased by 364.9 thousand people, medium-sized companies -  by 135.9 thousand employees, and   in microenterprises - by 67 thousand people. The number of employees in SMEs directly depends on the number of sector entities; therefore, the Federal Tax Service associates this dynamics with the enlargement of the sector, because of which companies no longer fall under the criteria of small or medium-sized businesses.

Anton Danilov-Danilyan, co-chairman of Business Russia business association, does not agree with this argument: in his opinion, the decrease in the number of companies and employees is associated with distrust of the business in state support measures, as their use requires going out of the shadows. Experts also note that some of the employees could become self-employed, since this tax regime is more profitable than other forms of business organization.
