Russian companies will be able to protect their trademarks abroad: the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will include Russian language into the list of working languages of filing applications for the international protection of trademarks and design solutions.
“We already provide the opportunity to file patent applications in Russian. Such an opportunity will also be available for trademarks and design solutions. This issue has already been resolved”, according to the Director General of WIPO Francis Gurry. It is yet unknown when the changes will enter into force. The Head of the Russian Federal Agency for Intellectual Property, Patents and Trademarks said that this innovation would reduce the cost of patent attorney services and translation of applications, as well as simplify the search for applications and active registrations.
