The spread of coronavirus in Russia will affect consumer behavior: first, Russians will buy goods, but in a few weeks they will be forced to save money. According to the director of the Center for Market Studies of the Higher School of Economics (HSE) Georgy Ostapkovich, this will happen in a month or two.
According to him, baby boomers (people born in 1946-1960) and representatives of generation X (those who were born between 1961-1980) will buy mainly food and disinfectants. “And you can’t blame these people for irrational consumer behavior, even taking into account the fact that 30-50 percent of these goods will not be in demand,” the specialist said.
According to Ostapkovich, Russians of generation Z (born after 1995) and partially millennials (1981-1994 years of birth) will buy goods that will allow them to brighten up a long stay at home. We are talking, for example, about exercise bikes and computer games.
“People will go into a blank savings defense in order to accumulate reserves to minimize further possible losses,” the expert concluded. He believes that the partial isolation of workers can have a beneficial effect on food production, as appetite is growing at home. In addition, an increase in fertility may be an additional plus.
