Dmitry Chernyakov’s radical interpretation of the classical Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov opera was performed at the National Opera of the Netherlands.
Opera "The Legend of Invisible Kitezh Town and Maiden Fevronia" by Rimsky-Korsakov is based on an ancient Russian legend. Director Dmitry Chernyakov staged it at the Mariinsky Theater in 2001, having caused immense resonance among opera lovers and divided the audience into admirers and opponents of postmodernism in opera.
Dmitry Chernyakov's performance in the Netherlands displays the director’s deep understanding of Rimsky-Korsakov’s idea on people facing death. His interpretation is quite radical and conveys important meanings to the audience, albeit by harsh means.
