The United States is proposing to create a communication line to prevent conflicts in space, Christopher Ford, US Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation said. The sides will discuss security issues in outer space on July 27 in Vienna at a meeting on arms control.
“The communication channel does not have to be multilateral. It's more realistic to start with a two-way channel. Given that Russia has been doing strange and dangerous things in orbit, including the past two weeks, our operator should be able to contact their operator as potential problems arise and misunderstandings may occur, " Mr. Ford said on briefing.
He called the Vienna talks "an opportunity" for the United States and Russia to strengthen mutual understanding about each other's space policies and develop norms of responsible behavior. This, according to Christopher Ford, will help avoid miscalculations and misconceptions that can lead to unintended escalation.
Earlier in July, the US space command announced that Russia had conducted new tests of anti-satellite weapons in space. Prior to this, the Russian Ministry of Defense informed about the tests of the newest small satellite-inspector for the survey of another Russian spacecraft.
