Skolkovo resident Energoelement received the first loan in Russia secured by intellectual property (IP), Vedomosti reports. The company, which produces the new type of lithium-ion batteries, received a loan from MSP Bank in the amount of 4.3 million rubles at 8.5% per annum.
Energoelement submitted two patents as collateral. “We won a large tender for postpaid traction lithium-ion batteries, and in order to fulfill our obligations to the customer, we needed a loan to purchase materials. In addition to patents, we had nothing to offer the bank, and I remembered my idea of ten years ago - to use IP for these purposes, because our company owns seven patents. We indicated two of them in the application, and within a month, "SME Bank" approved a loan for us", - the CEO of the company Alexander Loginov said about the decision.
According to Roman Kapinos, deputy chairman of the board of SME Bank, the bank's proposal to provide a loan secured by intellectual property did not come as a surprise, and, in general, “the market has already matured to such transactions, taking into account the rapidly growing high-tech projects”.
