At a meeting of the UN Security Council on the problem of chemical weapons in Syria, the United States moved away from the stated topic and called on Russia to conduct a transparent investigation into what happened to the politician Alexei Navalny. The US call for an investigation was supported by Belgium, Great Britain, Germany and Estonia. Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Security Council Vasily Nebenzya said that Moscow has no grounds to start an investigation into the possible poisoning of the politician.
“We call on Russia for full transparency and punishment of those responsible. ...The poisoning of Alexei Navalny with the use of chemical weapons is completely unacceptable... Russia has used substances from the Novichok group in the past. Russian citizens have the right to express their opinions without fear of punishment; they should not become victims of chemical weapons. Wherever the investigation takes us, we will work with allies to ensure that those responsible are punished,” the US representative to the UN Security Council, Cherit Norman Chalet (quoted by TASS) said.
In response to calls from representatives of several countries to start an investigation at once, Mr. Nebenzya recalled that Berlin has not provided the data on the basis of which it was concluded that the Russian politician was poisoned with poison from the Novichok group yet. “We have no reason to start an investigation... We have not received any evidence from Germany that would allow us to conclude that it is a deliberate crime,” the diplomat said.
