The Politico named six possible options for how Germany can refuse the construction of Nord Stream 2. The authorities are discussing this issue because of what happened to Russian politician Alexei Navalny.
There are several options for suspending the construction of the gas pipeline, according to Politico:
to revoke the construction permit, this threatens with a court of law from the operator Nord Stream 2 AG with a claim for € 9.5 billion;
wait for a court decision on the claims of non-governmental organizations, Deutsche Umwelthilfe in court proves that Nord Stream 2 cannot be realized due to the goals set for global warming;
introduce restrictions on the import of Russian gas;
let the US stop the project;
insist on the imposition of sanctions by the European Union;
do not give permission to operate the gas pipeline, create problems with obtaining a license.
Germany believes that Russian politician Alexei Navalny was poisoned with combat poison from the Novichok group. In Russia they deny this and refuse to initiate a criminal case. Mr. Navalny was in a coma from August 20 to September 7.
Initially, German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged not to link the incident with Mr. Navalny and the construction of Nord Stream 2. But later she assumed that the poisoning could affect the implementation of the project.
