US Warns Participants of the Nord Stream 2 about the Threat of Sanctions

The US government is contacting European companies involved in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and warning them of the threat of sanctions, an unnamed US government official said. His words with reference to the German agency DPA are quoted by RIA Novosti, Prime and TASS. “The US does not want to impose sanctions on European companies. We make these calls to warn them and give them time to go out,” the DPA's interlocutor said.  He did not specify what companies the US government is calling. According to the official, Nord Stream 2 is "a geopolitical project that Russia will use to blackmail European countries."

Within the framework of the Nord Stream 2 project, it is planned to build two gas pipeline strings with a total length of almost 2.5 thousand kilometers and a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year. The pipeline runs through Germany, Denmark, Russia, Finland and Sweden. All five countries have given permits. On October 20, the US State Department announced the expansion of sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Companies are prohibited from providing services, goods, or funding to “upgrade or install equipment” on ships that will operate the project.

Handelsblatt reported on Friday that the Eastern Committee of the German Economy has approached the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, with a proposal to drop the Nord Stream 2 sanctions. The letter, dated November 17, noted that German businesses found out that "American Democrats want to impose new, extraterritorial sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 project at the expense of European companies." The Eastern Committee called on the US to "refrain from economic penalties."
