Over the centuries, a number of artists have resorted to the events of biblical history. Strictly following
the canon, like the Byzantine masters, introducing elements of secular image into the composition, like
Raphael and Michelangelo, or interpreting the plot and freely experimenting with the form, like Picasso
and Bourdelle, the artists of different epochs invariably drew special inspiration from episodes of
Christian history.
The sculptor A. N. Burganov has also repeatedly referred to scenes from biblical history in his artwork. In
these works, his perception of the gospel events is invariably complex, ambiguous and tragic.
Not being a religious artist, A. N. Burganov rethinks the essence of many phenomena and moves away
from the straightforward, classical interpretation of subjects, refuses to depict canonical iconographic
schemes and attaches deep and philosophical significance to his works.
