The police have put cordons around The Bronze Soldier statue on Tonismagi Hill in the centre of Tallinn; preparation to digging the mass grave under the monument started early in the morning today. At half past 5 in the morning several cars with special troops arrived to the Bronze Soldier, and later construction equipment was brought to the area. The movement of activists organized to protect the monument was pushed aside; according to the movement`s leader Alexander Korobov, 3 representatives of the movement sitting in a car were beaten, and one woman was even taken to hospital.
The decision of the Estonian government says that on the 9th of May, the day of victory over Nazi Germany, the monument will be unavailable to visit. All willing to bring flowers to the Bronze Soldier will not be able to do it due to digging works. According to preliminary data, the dismantling works at the memorial may last from 2 weeks to 4 months.
