The British medical association calls to draw special attention to air passengers` medical care. A recent report by this organization marks that despite the popularity of air transport nobody seriously focuses on air travellers` health. The scientists also mention the absence of international obligations on airlines concerning providing emergency medical care.
Russian experts from Domodedovo Airport speak out on how the problem is handled in Russia. It is said that there is no any proper statistics on the number of deaths in Russian airports, including the deaths of heart failure.
However, it sometimes happens that someone starts to feel unwell, especially in hot weather. For this case the airport has a medical care service with more than 100 people staff, and professional doctors are always ready to help passengers. There are also 2 ambulance cars that have resuscitators and defibrillators used for providing medical care to passengers with heart diseases. If an air passenger happens to feel unwell aboard plane during a flight, this is a responsibility of the workers of the air company who must be trained to provide the first aid. The air companies say that travellers with serious heart disorders should inform the air company about it beforehand.
Vladimir Vasilenko, a Russian associate professor, Candidate of Medical Science, gives general advice to people with cardiac diseases. He advises to always have all the needed medicine within an easy reach; to avoid spicy and salted food, coffee, and caffeine containing drinks if offered aboard; to drink enough water during a flight; to carry a list of medicine that causes an allergic reaction in them; to carry a copy of the last ECG; to carry a document about the pulse generator or about an operation. If a passenger needs extra oxygen, they must notify the air company about it 2 days before the flight.
