Aeroflots competitor becomes strategic partner of Lufthansa

The German air company Lufthansa has made a contract on strategic partnership with AiRUnion a union of Russian airlines. In 2008 Lufthansa and AiRUnion are launching joint air ticket sales. Later it is planned to unite the route networks and synchronize the services in the sphere of international communications with Russian cities.
Wolfgang Mayrhuber, the Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Lufthansa, marks that Russia is an important market area for the German air company. Together with the Russian partner Lufthansa hopes to offer passengers a wide network of communications within Russia and therefore to strengthen their position in the RF.
Lufthansa weekly carries out 200 flights to 18 cities of the Commonwealth of Independent States. According to the newspaper Die Welt, the Russian partners may face some difficulties with providing Lufthansa passengers with the same level of comfort they are used to. The majority of 70 AiRUnion aircraft are outdated IL and TU planes, as the newspaper Handelsblatt reports with reference to Russian experts.
