Mahmoud Abbas to Make Allies

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has arrived in Moscow on a three-day working visit. The Palestinian leader will try to convince Moscow to give its full support to the Fatah movement and to support the peace plan with Israel agreed upon with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Our relations with Russia are rather close. We have constant contact. said Mahmoud Abbas.

Russia tends to see Palestine united and strong and supports Mahmoud Abbas as a Palestinian leader heading the Palestine Liberation Organisation and a legally elected PLO head.

This is his first visit of Mahmoud Abbas to Moscow since the Gaza Strip came under the control of Hamas. His previous visits to Russia were in 2005 and 2006.
