Poland demands re-examination of Nord Stream pipeline

The Polish authorities have demanded to conduct an ecological re-examination of the North-European pipeline (Nord Stream), which will be laid on the bottom of the Baltic Sea, reports Kommersant. Initially the ecological examination of the gas pipeline took place in April 2007.
According to the newspaper, Nord Stream has changed the route and will run north of the Danish island of Bornholm and past the Economic zone of Poland. Therefore, Poland is no longer able to demand a high-priced examination, though it tries to persuade other countries involved in the project of the necessity of this step.
Nord Stream Company changed the route and made the projected pipeline 8 kilometres longer in order to avoid possible troubles with chemical weapon buried on the bottom of the Baltic Sea since the Second World War.
Poland is one of the main opponents of the project, as the successful implementation will reduce the volume of payments the country receives for gas transit, experts say. The Baltic countries also oppose the idea of the undersea pipeline. They want it to go onshore.
