Chechnya to close British Council

Chechnya Prosecutor’s Office has appealed to the Supreme Republic Court to close the British noncommercial organization ‘Center for Peacekeeping and Community Development’ in Groznyy.

The British organization is accused of violation tax and accreditation laws. According to Varery Kuznetsov, a Groznyy prosecutor, the Center’s accreditation ran out in 2006, more than that it wasn’t put on a list of branches and missions of international organizations. In fact he calls the Center’s activity illegal. The row has a link with the process of closing British Councils offices in Russian regions.

The British Center in Groznyy call Prosecutor’s claim baseless and he says the Center is to go on working.
