Petersburg Getting Ready for 200th Anniversary of Nikolai Gogol

Saint Petersburg is getting ready to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Russian classic Nikolai Gogol (18091852) in 2009. The event has been included in the UNESCO List of Memorable Dates of 2008-2009.
However, the city authorities are not supportive of the public initiative to open the museum of the great writer.
We have no grounds for establishing the Gogol Museum in St. Petersburg Chairman of St. Petersburg Culture Committee Nikolai Burov says. The apartment in Malaya Morskaya Street, where the writer used to live, has been totally redesigned; almost nothing of his authentic belongings has been preserved.
However, the city administration is ready to allocate 1.800 thousand roubles for the restoration of the two Gogol monuments and three memorial plates in St. Petersburg. The celebration project of 2009 might turn quite remarkable: For the sake of Gogol we can even close off the Nevsky Prospect! Mr. Burov stated.
By the way, there is a special tour named Gogol in Petersburg there. In the city on Neva the renowned writer created his Evenings on the Farm near Dikanka, Mirgorod, Taras Bulba, Nevsky Prospect, and The Inspector-General, and initiated and published Dead Souls.
