According to the Daily Mirror (09/02/2008), Formula One owner Bernie Ecclestone intends to build a racing circuit near St. Petersburg. The online newspaper writes that Bernie will travel to the northern capital of Russia next weekend and meet with St. Petersburg governor Valentina Matvienko to discuss terms and conditions of the first ever Grand Prix stage in Russia.
The sources close to the project report that the site for building a track has already been chosen and is located somewhere near Pulkovo; however, Bernie Ecclestone says that they have not reached any certain agreements yet. "Nothing is done yet but this could be an interesting development for the sport," Ecclestone said.
If Bernie Ecclestone finally decides to bring his idea to life, this means that Russia will snatch the future Formula One Grand Prix from Melbourne, Australia, after 2010 when the contract with the Australian authorities expires.
