The famous sculptor Zurab Tsereteli declares he wants to erect a hundred-meter (!) statue of Christ in Solovki. It is going to be almost three times higher than the sculpture of Jesus in Rio and four times higher than Vera Mukhina’s Worker and Peasant statue.
“This monument will become a museum the tablets of which will bear the names of all those who perished in those places” – the sculptor states. However, Zurab Tsereteli has not yet demonstrated to anyone what the monument will look like.
“At present a very operose process of enlarging the sculpture is being under way” – he explained to journalists - “It is too early to introduce it to the public yet”.
“The monument will ruin the overall scanty landscape of Solovki islands – Head of ‘Memorial’ Society Arseny Roginsky asserts. – I doubt it very much that UNESCO which considers Solovki to be a monument will consent to it”.
“Any project of the kind ought to be subjected to wide public discussion and considered with monks of the Solovki monastery. – Priest Georgy Ryabykh, a Moscow Patriarchate representative pointed out.
It looks like mainland has no place for creations of Zurab Tsereteli left any more. So, is it now islands’ turn to provide it?
