Unique Research in the Antarctic
Lake Vostok

Scientists prepare for the unique experiment – getting to the relict Vostok Lake through 4-km-thick ice.

Water samples will be collected in 2009 within scientific programmes of the 54th Russian Antarctic Expedition.

Only 80 meters separate impatient researchers from waters of the subglacial lake. Existing well stopped at 3668 meters due to malfunction of the drilling equipment. New bores will arrive to the Antarctic this autumn.

The Vostok Lake is the largest among Antarctic subglacial lakes with 5 million 400 thousand cubic meters of fresh water.
