A monument to the famous Russian manufacturer and patron of arts Savva Mamontov was unveiled in Yaroslavl on Thursday marking the 140th anniversary of Northern railroad.

The bronze sculpture six meters high depicts the figure of Mamontov holding a watch and a pair of compasses in his hands.

“According to the architects’ idea the watch symbolizes time and the compass stands for infinite expanses of northern lands that were united and integrated into Russian economy with the help of railroads” – local authorities of the Northern main line explain.
