Fragments of ship details of the 10th century have been discovered at the Troitsky excavation site in Veliki Novgorod.
Archeologists assume that they have found the oldest rowing boat of Novgorod city, said Sergey Troyanovsky, director of centre for organization and provision of archeological research at the Novgorod State United Museum Reserve.
“Probably it is this very boat that started the development of Novgorod as a trading centre, which later grew into partnership with the Hanseatic League, a large trading alliance of northern German cities.
According to Sergey Troyanovsky the boat is made of linden, though “traditionally aspen was used for these purposes”.
