Journalist Protection Centre to be set up in Russia

Russian authorities purpose to set up a journalist protection centre to provide legal aid to media workers and protect them against assaults. The idea to open such a centre came up after Mikhail Beketov, the chief editor of a local newspaper, was beaten to coma.

The center is believed to act as an emergency service: any journalist can make a call to report about his/her problem and law officers will react immediately.

However, the centre will hardly protect journalists from attacks; the only way to reduce the number of crimes against media workers is to introduce harsher punishments. The authorities will submit relevant amendments for consideration to the State Duma shortly.
