Russian Scientists to Land Spacecraft on Phobos

Russian scientists are going to implement an expedition never ever done in the history of space exploration - they want to land an explorer spacecraft on a satellite of a different planet.

Phobos, a Mars satellite, has been chosen to become the place for landing.

The main spacecraft with the second, smaller craft onboard will land on the surface of the Mars satellite. As soon as ground samples from Phobos surface are loaded to the recovery capsule, it will start off from the maternal lander and go towards the Earth, - Scientific Secretary of Space Research Institute Alexander Zakharov reported to Interfax.

The launching of the Phobos-Ground spacecraft to the Mars satellite is possible in 2009 already.
