Ancient Burial Ground Discovered in Tambov

In the course of underground passage laying builders have unearthed lots of human remains at a 3-meter depth in the centre of Tambov city.

Archeologists and historians need study it all for establishing the time of the burials, - the Deputy Director of the Centre for Historical and Cultural Legacy Preservation Marina Klimova said. - However, we can assume that they date back to the 17th century, when the Tambov Fortress founded in 1636 was just starting to be built.

Archpriest of Tambov Eparchy Georgy Neretin added that the remains were found on the place of an ancient kremlin, and so probably the towns first builders or defenders had been buried there.

It is known that at first after the construction of Tambov Fortress on the southern boundary of Russia its defenders every year had to beat off dozens of forays by nomads, who had previously robbed the local settlements with impunity.
