Secret Subway Discovered in Ural Church

In the course of restoration works in the Vvedenskaya Church (Church of the Presentation in the Temple) of Verknie Sergi Settlement restorers found an ancient tunnel.

After deeper excavation they unearthed two parallel flagstone walls abutting against the northern base of the church. The width between them is about a meter and a half, allowing a person to pass through freely.

The restorers surmise that the discovered fragments of corridors make one and the same tunnel. Most probably, the conduit was constructed in the time of the very first wooden churches in the early 18th century, when such shelters and escape routes were of vital importance.
