Actor Pyotr Velyaminov Passes Away

The Peoples Artist of Russia, film actor Pyotr Velyaminov has died, aged 82, in St. Petersburg.
      Pyotr Velyaminov was born on 7 December 1926 in Moscow into the family of a gentleman by birth. In 1943 at the age of 16 he was arrested on charge of participation in an anti-soviet organization. The court pleaded him guilty and the boy was sent to GULAG, from where he was released in 1952.
      The future actor got his first acting experience in the camps amateur performances. After discharge from GULAG Pyotr Velyaminov for three years was a worker at rafting of timber. It was a happy coincidence that helped him find himself in the company of the Abakan Drama Theatre.
      The actor made his film debut in 1971 in the drama Shadows Disappear at Noon (Teni ischezayut v polden), the role becoming his most famous work.
      Besides, he gained fame due to his roles in the films The Captain of the Lucky Pike (Komandir schastlivoy 'Shchuki') (1972), The Eternal Call (Vechnyy zov) (1973), Twentieth Century Pirates (Piraty XX veka) (1979), and others.
      Pyotr Velyaminov will be laid to rest at Volkovskoe Cemetery in Saint Petersburg on Wednesday.
