Ingushetia President wounded in assassination attempt

Gradual exacerbation of the situation in Ingushetia, one of the Russian Caucasian republics bordering Chechnya, culminated in an assassination aimed to kill Ingush President Yunus Yevkurov.
      Today, at 8.40 Moscow Time, the president's convoy was rocked by a blast while driving to Magas, the capital of the republic. Yevkurov was wounded and immediately hospitalized. The driver of the president's car and a bodyguard are killed and several other people are injured.
      According to some witnesses, a car with a Moscow number plate moving along with the convoy suddenly rammed into the president's Mercedes and detonated. Later the Moscow police confirmed the fact that car involved in the terrorist attack was on the list of stolen vehicles.
      Yunus-Bek Yevkurov is reported to have been successfully operated on and already taken to Moscow for further treatment by an emergency plane.
      Yevkurov has been the president of Ingushetia for about 6 months. He was appointed president after removing Murat Zyazikov, former KGB agent, recognized unable to fight corruption and local gunmen.
