The Peoples Artist of Russia, Legendary Singer Ludmila Zykina Passes Away

Ludmila Zykina has just celebrated the 80th anniversary since her birthday. Her choir Russia was going to tour around Russia with famous Russian songs. But she has passed away suddenly because of a heart seizure.
      Ludmila Georgievna Zykina was born 10 June 1929 in Moscow into the family of workers. All of her relatives sang very well. She recalled that her granny had taught her old Russian songs.
      During the Second World War the future star worked as a lathe operator at the Moscow Machine-Tool Factory and even deserved the honorary title of the factorys merited worker. After the war she worked as a nurse in Vishnevski Hospital and then as a sewer in Kashchenko Hospital. This is when her first audience appeared.
      Ludmila Zykina started her career as a singer in 1947, when after her successful performance in the All-Russian Contest of Young Singers she was admitted to the Pyatnitsky State Russian Folk Choir. Later, in 1951, she became a singer of the Russian Song Choir of the All-Union Radio, and in 1960 she joined the Mosconcert. Her solo singing career started in 1960. She became very popular in the 1960-70s with the songs Orenbursky pukhovy platok (the downy shawl from Orenburg) and River Volga. In 1977 Ludmila Zykina created the State Academic Russian Folk Ensemble Russia and was its art director ever since, touring a lot aroud the Soviet Union. The singer performed for almost 60 years.
      She loved Russia and expressed her love in her songs the well-known singer Joseph Kobzon said.
      Ludmila Zykina will be buried at Novodevichie Cemetery on 4 July.
