Famous Moscow theatre aflame
27.05.2005 00:00

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Theatre was swept by a devastating fire devouring the heart of the house the stage and the auditorium.
Bolshaya Dmitrovka Street was sealed off for traffic, leaving room for 50 fire brigades and two ambulances. No injured or dead have been reported, but the two-year reconstruction of the impressive house built 205 years ago, scheduled to be finished by the citys anniversary, was brought to naught.
The fire gutting the 16.4 sq m building was given the highest degree. The fire services thought of a helicopter but the surroundings, too dense for such operations, did not allow it.
The reason for the five-hour disaster is still not clear, with the short circuit as a candidate for some. It is a second time a fire hits the theatre over the past three years. In July 2003, actors had to run out into the street in costumes. The last complete overhaul was over 50 years ago when the theatre was set up and housed in this building.
The parts destroyed are likely to be brought down due to a heavy risk of human injuries in case they collapse. The new house will be ready not earlier than in six months, says the management.
